Boris Johnson to Present Government's Plan to Combat the Spread of Coronaviruses
Boris Johnson will present the government's plan to combat the spread of the coronavirus, as he stressed that the ministers were "ready to take the necessary steps" to contain the disease.
The Prime Minister said it was "very likely" that the virus would spread more widely in the days and weeks to come, and sought to reassure the public that "all possible preparations" were under way.
He will launch the plan Tuesday at a press conference in Downing Street, alongside chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty and chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance.
Measures should include the creation of a "war room" at the Cabinet Office to bring together communications experts and scientists from across government, and the NHS to launch a public information campaign .
Unnecessary travel can be discouraged and homework encouraged if the virus spreads, as part of a "social distancing" strategy aimed at delaying the peak of the epidemic until later in the year, when the weather is warmer.
Retired doctors and nurses could be asked to return to work and emergency workers' compensation coverage could be provided.
Whitehall departments will have a departmental virus designated to oversee the response to the global threat of the virus – such as in schools or businesses.

A major public information campaign will be launched later this week to explain how the public can help limit the spread of the virus, including washing their hands regularly with soap and water.
And legislation allowing the government to use additional powers to help control the virus is expected to be brought to parliament by the end of the month.
Mr Johnson said: "It is very likely that the coronavirus will spread more widely in the coming days and weeks, which is why we are making all preparations possible.
"We have agreed on a plan, which I will outline in detail today, so if the virus spreads, we are ready to take the necessary measures to contain it and protect the most vulnerable."
