Boris Johnson warns British people that all of our lives will change as he declares war on deadly coronavirus The Sun

BORIS Johnson is going to throw the country on the warpath today to fight the coronavirus epidemic.

Downing Streets' battle plan will put the nation on red alert for a series of restrictions in the event of a mass infection.

The PM will also tell nervous British people that the deadly coronavirus could change everyone's life.

His harsh warning comes as four other cases in the UK were confirmed last night, including the first child, bringing the total to 39.

Last night, a Downing Street insider warned that if the coronavirus becomes a pandemic, life cannot go on as it does now.

A new four-part battle plan will include a strategy of social distancing, with the British being urged to work from home and avoid unnecessary travel.

The ministers will also launch a massive public relations blitz asking the public to wash their hands regularly.

An army of retired doctors and nurses could also be called in amid fears that the NHS will have a hard time coping if current doctors catch the virus.

A high-level government source said: If we find ourselves in the scenario where this is a complete epidemic, measures will have to be taken so that life cannot go on as it does now.

And we will have to make some changes to make sure we do everything we can to protect the public and delay the full onset of this virus.

Undertaking to give the NHS all the money or resources it needs, Mr Johnson said the British should prepare for a very large expansion of the coronavirus.

Measures will have to be taken so that life cannot go on as it does now.

He said: It is very likely that the coronavirus will spread more widely in the coming days and weeks.

PM will launch the new strategy in Downing Street today, along with chief medical officer Chris Whitty and chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance.

He will outline the government's four-step plan to contain, delay, seek and mitigate.

No10 thinks it will take months rather than weeks for the epidemic to peak in Britain.

The ministers hope to be able to delay it until the spring, which will give time to develop a vaccine.

What to do if you are afraid of having a coronavirus

The new coronavirus continues to spread around the world, with Britain seeing more cases in people who are not linked to epidemics abroad.

Symptoms of Covid-19 may include:

  • a cough
  • high temperature
  • difficulty breathing

In most cases, you will not know if you have a coronavirus or other cold-causing virus.

But if a coronavirus infection spreads to the lower respiratory tract, it can cause pneumonia, especially in the elderly, people with heart disease, or people with weakened immune systems.

It is incredibly contagious and spreads through contact with everything the virus is on as well as through infected breathing, coughing or sneezing.

The best way to avoid catching any form of coronavirus is to practice good hygiene.

If you have cold symptoms, you can help protect others by staying home when you are sick and avoiding contact with others.

You should also cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough and sneeze, then throw it away and wash your hands.

Cleaning and disinfecting objects and surfaces you may have touched is also important.

If you have returned from Wuhan in the past 14 days:

  • Stay indoors and avoid contact with other people like you would with other flu viruses
  • Call NHS 111 to let them know about your recent trip to town
  • your recent trip to town

If you are in Northern Ireland, call your GP.

Please follow these tips even if you do not have symptoms of the virus.

Meanwhile, leading provider of symptom verification at the NHS Doctorlink has been updated to help identify the risk of coronavirus for patients.

The plan will highlight the need for vulnerable people over the age of 60 with pre-existing health conditions to protect themselves.

Speaking last night, after ministers, including the Secretary of Health, Matt Hancock, attended an emergency meeting in Downing Street, the Prime Minister said that the country was very well prepared.

But he warned that ministers could take extreme measures, including blocking cities, closing schools and canceling large rallies like music festivals and football games.

The British need to know what an epidemic could mean, although some ministers fear it will trigger mass panic.

But the Prime Minister said: I have absolutely no doubt that this country will not be defeated by the coronavirus, and that we will end up crossing it very well.

Four other cases in the UK were confirmed last night, including the first under the age of 18, bringing the total to 39.

A pupil of the Churston Ferrers Grammar School in Torbay, Devon, became the first case of children confirmed by the British. They and a relative are believed to have been infected during a visit to northern Italy.

"WE WILL NOT BE DEFEATED"

However, doctors were baffled by another new case, a patient from Harlow, Essex, who had no contact with anyone from hot spots.

He raised fears that the virus would spread wildly across the UK.

Professor Paul Cosford of Public Health England said most of the patients had links to countries where the infection was prevalent.

But he added: there are a small number now where it is much more difficult to find this link, and this leads us to believe that we might very well see a more widespread infection in the UK fairly quickly.

An NHS worker working at Kents Maidstone Studios, where Catchphrase, Blind Date and Take Me Out are filmed, was also diagnosed.

He was in an office rented from the North East London NHS Foundation Trust, where staff have now been asked to work from home.

A school near Prince Charles Highgrove Estate in Tetbury, Gloucs, fears an epidemic after eight workers have had to self-isolate.

A special school in Farnham, Surrey, also closed for deep cleaning after a staff member was exposed to a coronavirus patient.

Britain's battle plan – what could be done to stop the epidemic?

  • Schools could be closed
  • Large-scale public gatherings could be suppressed, such as concerts, sports games and public speeches
  • British people may have to work from home and avoid public transport
  • General practitioners and other health professionals may need to be retired from retirement to help treat the public
  • Non-emergency operations may have to be postponed or abandoned
  • New travel bans could be put in place

Meanwhile, a Chinese woman was discharged from Lewisham hospital, south-east London, after recovering from the virus.

The online supermarket Ocado said it was out of stock because the British are stocking items.

Yesterday, the OECD, the club of the wealthy nations, said that the virus could cause the greatest financial crisis of a decade.
