101 of the UK’s most promising future science leaders are backed by 190 million government investments to help make new scientific innovations a reality, from Edinburgh to Exeter, and successful projects include identifying cancerous tumors more quickly. The government announced today (Thursday, October 15) that more than 100 rising science and research leaders in the UK will benefit from a cash aid of 190 million to turn innovative ideas into innovative products and services.

Among the UK’s next-generation science leaders today is Dr. Yoselin Benitez-Alfonso of the University of Leeds, who is working to ensure that UK crops are resistant to viruses and not affected by climate change, such as depleted soils lacking water or nutrients. This will help ensure the UK’s food supply remains strong even in bad weather in the future.

Another project, led by Dr. Simon Mitchell of the University of Sussex, will develop a personalized medicine to treat the most common form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer that affects the immune system. The government has committed more than 900 million over three years to the Future Leader Fellowship initiative delivered through UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

The work of the fellows will be central to the government’s ambitions to solidify the UK’s position as the world’s leading science powerhouse as set out on its ambitious research and development (R&D) roadmap in July this year.

Funds provided to fellowships constitute part of the government’s commitment to increase public spending on R&D by 2024-2025 to 22 billion, with the UK spending on R&D across the UK economy by 2027. Which can reach 2.4% of GDP.
