Britain obtained PPE from a factory that secretly uses North Korean slave labor

The British government is investigating claims that North Korean women procured PPE from Chinese factories working as modern slaves.

The Ministry of Health is estimated to have ordered hundreds of thousands of work clothes from a factory in Dandong, a northeast city on the banks of the Yalu River, which borders China and North Korea.

In these workplaces, North Korean women claim that 70% of their wages are seized by the North Korean government, work 18 hours a day, have little breaks, are under constant surveillance, and are unable to leave factories freely.

Workers do not have days off, a factory manager told The Guardian after three months of investigation.

They can’t go out. North Korea [state] Control them. They are making money for the country.

According to a newspaper survey, workers earn 2,200 (240) to 2,800 (310) yuan a month, but most of them must be handed over to North Korean managers.

This small amount is still more than workers can expect in North Korea, and the poor are prone to exploitation.

According to the International Labor Organization, the UN has classified North Korea’s overseas exports of workers as state-supported forced labor, a form of modern slavery.

Factories that use North Korean workers violate UN sanctions to cut state revenues and cut down on the money they have to spend on regimes banning nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

The United States also individually imposed sanctions on North Korea and banned the import of goods manufactured in whole or in part by North Koreans.

However, the Guardian investigation found evidence that North Korean labor was used in factories exporting PPE to the United States as well as to Italy, Germany, South Africa, South Korea, the Philippines and Myanmar.

However, there is no evidence that all parties are aware of modern slavery in the PPE supply chain.

Evidence the Guardian saw indicates that the Department of Health and Social Affairs (DHSC) signed a contract with Unispace Global Ltd, a British commercial design firm that established a PPE procurement department called Unispace Health Ltd after the epidemic began.

The company has since become one of the largest domestic contractors for PPE.

According to the document, the Guardian said that the order was subcontracted to Dandong Huayang Textile & Garment Co., Ltd. through a Chinese trading company, and used a second branch, a large garment factory in Dandong.

There is no indication that either DHSC or Unispace Global Ltd are aware that North Korean workforce may exist in the PPE supply chain.

Metro.co.uk contacted Unispace Global Ltd for comment.

The Ministry of Health and Human Services said in a statement: We expect all NHS suppliers to follow the highest legal and ethical standards and to conduct appropriate due diligence on all government contracts.

Currently, while this contract is being signed, we take all charges of modern slavery and forced labor seriously. Investigate and contact your provider.

We’ve been working tirelessly to provide PPE to protect health and social welfare staff at the forefront by delivering over 4.9 billion PPE items to date.

Dandong clothing manufacturers have been using North Korean manpower for years. Under the agreement, Chinese factories secure cheap labor and the North Korean regime is paid millions of dollars.

As the epidemic swept the world, garment manufacturers in border cities began to rapidly shift their production lines from apparel to isolation gowns and protective clothing.

According to a post posted on the Dandong government website, from January to July of this year, more than 21 million PPEs were produced in the city and its surrounding factories.
