The Prime Minister announced that workers could now claim sickness benefits from the first day rather than the fourth day, as the number of coronavirus cases in the UK had risen to 53 earlier today.
Speaking in the House of Commons about PMQ, Boris Johnson announced that the statutory sickness premium (PFS) will be available from the first day of illness under emergency legislation to fight against Coronavirus epidemic in the UK.
The Prime Minister congratulated those who self-isolate, adding that they "help protect us all by slowing the spread of the virus" and should not lose financially.
The Prime Minister added: "The Secretary of Health will present, within the framework of our legislation on emergency coronaviruses, measures to allow the payment of the statutory sickness benefit, from the first day when you are sick, instead of four days, according to the current rules.
A letter to the NHS trusts was also issued telling them to strengthen their plans to fight Covid-19, including seeing patients via video link.
In the letter, NHS director of strategic incidents, Professor Keith Willett, and incident director, Stephen Groves, say that acute care services can be used and that patients with coronavirus must be separated.
It indicates that an NHS level 4 incident has been reported – the highest level – and to date, Covid-19 has been managed as an infectious disease through specialized NHS centers.
But he says "that it is now appropriate to start taking care of some patients in larger units of infectious diseases and, in due course, if the number of cases continues to increase, we will have to use all acute units ".
