Seattle man charged in federal court after siege on US Capitol

Seattle’s Mark Leffingwell was among those indicted in federal court last week after Trump supporters disrupted Electoral College certification.

A Seattle man has been charged in federal court after police said they beat an officer in the deadly riot on the U.S. Capitol last Wednesday, the U.S. prosecutor’s office confirmed.

Supporters of President Donald Trump have told reporters and posted on social media that they are aiming to prevent Congress from certifying the results of the presidential election.

Seattle’s Mark Leffingwell was among the crowd in the hallway of the Senate wing of the Capitol building, prosecution documents show. As police attempted to create a barrier to prevent further entry, a Capitol Hill officer said Leffingwell hit him in the chest and on his helmet.

The officer took him into custody, according to prosecution documents.

Leffingwell has been charged with knowingly entering or remaining in a building or restricted land without legal authorization, assaulting a federal police officer, violent entry and disorderly conduct on the Capitol grounds.

Leffingwell was released on a personal commitment to his wife and must register with the Department of Justice in Washington DC each week, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Federal investigations are continuing.

The headquarters of the United States Capitol on Wednesday temporarily suspended the certification of the Electoral College.

Trump supporters involved in the siege were motivated by their belief in the belied claim that Trump won the election.

A policeman protecting the Capitol is dead, as are four people present during the riot.
