Another 1,564 coronavirus deaths have been reported in the UK. This is the highest daily figure since the pandemic began after some data dating back to May was added late.

The previous high was 1,325, reported on January 8.

The total number of deaths within 28 days of positive for COVID-19 is 84,767.

Another 47,525 was added to the government’s coronavirus data dashboard. There were less than 50,000 new infections in 3 days. That sum is now 3,211,576.

Most of the recent deaths reported occurred last week, but some date back to May 8, 2020, when the first state lockdown was still in effect.

Prior to updating the UK-wide figures, NHS England confirmed that 1,012 people who tested positive for COVID-19 died in hospitals, resulting in a total of 57,828 deaths.

Patients were 39-102 years old and all patients except 46 (39-98 years old) were aware of their underlying health conditions.

The date of death was from May 8th, 2020 to January 12th, 2021, most of them after January 6th.

London had the highest number of deaths at 202, and mayor Sadiq Khan later confirmed that the capital’s total coronavirus deaths exceeded 10,000.

Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s first minister, announced that 79 people had died in the last 24 hours. Wales reported another 66 deaths, and Northern Ireland reported another 19.

British public health officer Yvonne Doyle said there were more COVID deaths across the UK during the second wave than last spring.

“As the days go by, more and more people are dying of this terrible virus. Today we report the most deaths per day since the epidemic began,” she said.

“There are now more deaths in the second wave than in the first.

“1 in 3 people with COVID-19 do not have symptoms, but it can still be transmitted to others, so it is essential to stay home to minimize contact with others and act as if they have the virus.”

Johns Hopkins University, which is tracking the pandemic worldwide, reports that the UK has more COVID deaths than any other country in Europe.

It ranks fifth overall after the United States, Brazil, India and Mexico.

PM’s appointment for a 24-hour jab

The number of people admitted to hospitals continues to grow in all four countries, and in Wales the total is now more than twice the first wave.

Dr Andrew Goodall, the chief executive officer of the NHS in Wales, currently has about 2,870 COVID-related patients undergoing treatment, which means they have to make “hard choices” about the range of services provided.

British hospitals are still under great pressure, but the Prime Minister told PMQ that as early as the UK’s third national lockdown “beginning to show signs of some effect”.

However, he did not rule out tightening the restrictions further, and the police are talking with ministers about tightening the rules with much debate about the movement.

Ms Sturgeon has already announced new actions for Scotland, including limiting click and collect services to essential shopping.

Boris Johnson also told the MP that the NHS would start a 24-hour vaccination service as soon as possible.

He said the process of protecting people from coronavirus is already “very fast.” However, “the limit is currently being supplied” of the vaccine.

“We will go 24/7 as soon as possible,” he said.

Health Minister Matt Hancock would explain more “in a timely manner”, Johnson added.

By January 12, more than 2.6 million people had their first shot.

Why Daily Totals Are Not As High as the First Wave (although it may seem) Analytics, Economics and Data Editor Ed Conway

Another record death toll reported today. This is terrible news and highlights the scale of life losses occurring nationwide. However, it’s important to note that for the time being, daily tolls are still lower than the spring highs of 2020 in similar respects.

The daily announcement total rises and falls according to the number of registered deaths over a 24-hour period, but looking at when the deaths occurred, the peak of the spring on April 8 was 1,072. The highest death toll in this second wave so far is 847 on January 7.

Although the spring surge was sudden and rapid, these waves lasted longer and were gradual, but not less lethal. Indeed, more so on some scales.

But beneath this gloomy news, there’s a glimmer of hope elsewhere in the data. Looking at the number of cases, it seems to be declining, or at least stagnating (it will take a few more days to see the trend).

If it goes on, it won’t prevent more deaths and hard weeks putting more pressure on hospitals. But that could mean that the overall picture of mortality rates begins to improve at the end of the month.
