An EU citizenship activist in the UK said she was shocked after the Home Office refused to apply for settlement status, despite having lived more than half of her in the UK.
Dahaba Ali, 27, moved to England at the age of 10. She was born in the Netherlands and her mother was given refugee status to escape the conflict in Somalia.
She is a producer on BBC Newsnight and Politics Live, and writes for various national print media. Ali is also a prominent activist for The3Million organization, which campaigns for the rights of EU citizens in the UK.
The campaign has repeatedly raised concerns that some EU citizens with the right to remain in the UK will have a hard time accessing and navigating the confirmed status application process ending June 30.
She spent her childhood in London, then attended the University of Cambridge and received a partial scholarship to study history. She applied for EU settlement for herself and her mother last October.
While being granted her motherhood, Ali received the following letter from the Interior Ministry dated March 28, 2021: Your application has been carefully considered, but unfortunately, from the information available, you do not meet the requirements of the scheme. Therefore, we are sorry to inform you that your application has been denied.
There is evidence that she lived in the UK periodically between February 2016 and December 2019, but it adds that this is a period of less than five years.
My heart subsided and when I read the letter, I felt sick. She said she did not leave England last year. At that time, the Interior Ministry asked her. She said she did not receive text messages on her phone, received an EUSS rejection, looked through her email spam folder, and found only emails from her home office asking for more information about her case.
Are you really being punished for missing a few emails? I will lose my right to work and will be transferred to the Netherlands. I can’t speak Dutch anymore.
A home office spokesman said Alis’ application for an EU settlement plan was denied because she did not provide evidence that she lived in the UK.
She may reapply for the scheme until June 30, 2021 and recommends that a dedicated staff contact the helpline who can assist in providing the requested evidence.
We have tried contacting her several times over several weeks by email, phone and text, but the requested evidence was not provided. We will accept a variety of evidence and work with people on a case-by-case basis to consider other evidence if necessary.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily.
