Actors Urge Boris Johnson To Increase Funding For The Arts And Put Culture At The Heart Of The Program | New

The actors are pressuring Boris Johnson to substantially increase funding for the arts to 0.5% of GDP, in a letter that describes the increase as a crucial investment for our economy.
The letter, written by the president of Equity Maureen Beattie and delivered to the Prime Minister by actors such as Tony Robinson and Miriam Margolyes, urges the government to introduce a two-year visa for creative workers after Brexit, and calls for that artistic and creative subjects be put back at the heart of the curriculum.
In the letter, Beattie says that the subsidized theater sector in the UK is dying for lack of basic food and warns that local arts budgets are being cut across the UK.
He calls for funding to be raised to 0.5% of GDP, down from 0.3%, and urges that investment in the creative industries be more evenly distributed across the UK.
The best starting point is to restore funding to local communities, he argues.
The letter also warns of the devastating effect that the loss of free movement between EU countries would have on artists due to Brexit.

Beattie then approaches the arts in education and urges Johnson to turn to his own education to see its value.
As a person who was educated in a school with a fully equipped theater with five professionals and an artistic director, I know you will understand the importance of giving young people the opportunity to flourish in the entertainment industry disciplines. If the arts are a key selling point in the world of the wealthy and powerful, then the benefits of arts education should certainly be available to everyone, the letter says.
Supporting the letter, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith described the creative industries as a thriving part of the country's economy.
Without sufficient government investment, this incredible achievement will falter and fade, he said.
The letter was presented to Downing Street on March 6.
