Funeral directors need to clarify pricing more, UK regulator says | Competition and market authorities

Funeral directors across the UK are required to post clear price tags, and new measures to help bereaved families prohibit referrals to hospitals and nursing homes.

A legally enforceable rule has been introduced as a result of an investigation by a competitive watcher who found that UK consumers are typically overcharged for at least 400 people when paying for funerals.

According to SunLife’s latest cost of death report, the average funeral cost in the UK has risen 39% over the past decade to reach 9,263.

A Competitive Markets Agency (CMA) study, published last summer, found that some funeral directors were providing unacceptably low levels of care for the deceased.

The two largest companies in the sector, Co-op and Dignity, have found that they are significantly more expensive than many of the smaller, typically family-owned businesses that operate most branches in the UK.

A rule announced on Wednesday requires all funeral directors to display standard price tags on all buildings and websites that include funeral headline prices, making it clear which individual items are included and the cost of additional products starting September 16. and service.

Additionally, starting June 17, funeral homes are prohibited from paying to incentivize hospitals, hospice, nursing homes, or similar institutions to refer customers to specific funeral homes. They are also blocked from soliciting business through coroner and police contracts.

Martin Coleman, chairman of the panel who led an investigation into the funeral industry last year, said: Organizing a funeral is one of the most difficult things for anyone to do, and it is important to treat people fairly. Customers need clear information so they can figure out what they’re billing for and compare prices from different providers if they want.

As a result of the CMA action, funeral service providers should make it easier for people to make the right choice for them by making sure the prices and services offered are clear. We urge funeral home and crematorium operators to start making these changes now. We are watching the sector closely and are ready to take action if businesses don’t follow the rules.
