Neighbors shocked after 16 more injured in botched police explosion of illegal fireworks – CBS Los Angeles

Los Angeles (SPSL) – At least 16 people, including 10 law enforcement officers, were injured, and several cars and buildings were hit Wednesday evening when police attempted to safely detonate illegal fireworks that had been seized in south Los Angeles.

“It felt like a strong earthquake that we had never felt before,” said Jasmine Vasquez, a resident. “We were so surprised we ran out. It sounded like a blast but it’s so close to our family.”

Other neighbors said they were shaken from their beds and rocked from their sofas in the aftermath of the explosion.

Police attempted to dispose of about 5,000 pounds of fireworks they discovered earlier Wednesday by detonating them in an armored container at about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday.

However, the force of the explosion destroyed the container and damaged several cars parked in the street.

“I was in the room watching TV and just heard something really powerful,” said Brandon Vazquez, who lives next door. “I walked out of the room feeling really anxious and scared.”

The Los Angeles Police Department said the fireworks were stored in an explosive squad trailer as a precaution and it was not known what caused the explosion.

Police arrested a 24-year-old man and discovered fireworks in a home in the 2700 block of East 27th Street near San Pedro Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The suspect’s name has not been revealed. The reason for the arrest was not immediately clear.
