Carlos Alcaraz: Tennis star aims for injury return at Cincinnati Open, Emma Raducanu not in draw
Carlos Alcaraz has taken part in the Cincinnati Open next month as the world number three moves closer to returning from a wrist injury.
The seven-time Grand Slam champion last played on tour in April when he suffered an injury during the Barcelona Open.
He has since withdrawn from the French Open and Wimbledon, missing the chance to defend his Roland Garros title.
Alcaraz will miss the Canadian Open, the next Masters tournament on the calendar, which will be held in Montreal from August 2 to 13.
But he plans to compete in the Cincinnati Open, also a Masters event, which runs from August 13 to 23.
The 23-year-old will try to prove he is ready for the US Open, the last Grand Slam of the year in which he is the reigning champion.
Alcaraz is also the title holder in Cincinnati, after Jannik Sinner retired from the final last year due to illness.
Dominant Sinner has won all five Masters 1,000 titles so far this year and he is in the field for Montreal after winning for the second consecutive year at Wimbledon.
England’s interest in Cincinnati will not include Emma Raducanu, who withdrew from Wimbledon due to a stress fracture in her lower leg.
Raducanu, 23, is fighting to be fit for the US Open, which starts on August 30.
Jack Draper will have to rely on a wildcard if he wants to compete in Cincinnati, but there is a spot available for the new British number one Arthur Fery.
Fery is on course to a career-high ranking of world number 36 after competing in the Wimbledon semi-finals.
