My wife and I moved to Napa in 2014. Two days after the major earthquake. We have lived here in the aftermath of earthquake, floods, fires, blackouts, and now a global pandemic.

We now have two children, both born and raised in Napa. We both have jobs we love in the Napa Valley. We have met new friends in childbirth classes, playgrounds, connolly ranch, oxbow communes, napa bookmin, and preschool for your child, through our work, and through the dates of playing the rainbow.

I have lived many places all over the country and have never felt that the place I used to live was “home” or that I had a “community”. I didn’t realize that was important to me.

But Napa (and I mean the whole Napa Valley), you showed me why society is so important. She showed me how “home” might look. This community gathers together during difficult times. You can communicate with your neighbors. Stop and talk in the grocery store. You donate money and goods to support the people who need them. Go out and tell the city council members to raise a rainbow flag. Snacks are left to postal workers during the holidays to thank them for their service.

We cannot live here. We may always be tenants and always feel that we will be required to move from these four walls that house my family. But our house is here in Napa. Our community is here in Napa. Friends that I’ve met here, colleagues who have inspired me every day, neighbors who are looking for our children, groups that meet and help others in times of need – you are at home. You are a community.
