Thousands of Venezuelan earthquake victims are still relying on aid from South Florida a month after the disaster

Nearly a month after the twin earthquakes devastated parts of Venezuela, daily life remains a struggle for thousands affected by the disaster.

The official death toll has reached 5,300, although tens of thousands of people remain missing.

In La Guaira, one of the worst affected areas, displaced residents continue to rely on the World Central Kitchen for basic food.

Chef Olivier de Bellroche, who spoke from Venezuela to CBS News Miami, said the organization produces 22,000 hot meals and 13,000 sandwiches daily.

So far, the nonprofit has provided 1 million meals, with some making deliveries directly to the sites of collapsed buildings where survivors continue to search for the remains of their loved ones.

“They still have a lot of families waiting for their loved ones,” De Bellerouche said.

With most international search and rescue crews returning home, de Bellerroche noted the increasing difficulty facing those remaining on the ground. “There is less aid on the ground, but this makes the work more difficult for them,” he said.

In Doral, the Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) is running an ongoing relief operation, collecting donations and preparing them for shipment to the affected area.

“We’ve helped 145,000 people. We’ve delivered over 2,000 pallets,” said GEM’s Billy Richardson.

Despite these efforts, the scale of the disaster has created long-term needs that remain largely unmet. Richardson stressed that the recovery process is likely to take years.

“The need there is going to be really great for years,” Richardson said, adding that current donations of canned proteins and vegetables remain a critical priority.
