Satellite data shows ground motion from the 2021 Haiti earthquake

On August 14, 2021, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck western Haiti, causing widespread damage and loss of life, and causing landslides across the region.

Scientists at the Advanced Rapid Imaging and Analysis (ARIA) Project, a collaboration between NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the California Institute of Technology, analyzed interferometric synthetic aperture radar images from the Copernicus Sentinel-1A satellite operated by the European Space Agency (ESA) for his account. Using images obtained before and after the earthquake — August 3 and 15, 2021, respectively — the scientists produced this false-color map showing how much permanent surface motion the earthquake caused. The areas in blue moved toward the satellite by up to 16 inches (50 cm) in a combination of upward and eastward movement. These blue areas are close to the epicenter – marked by an orange star – indicating the potential for a significant slippage in the fault beneath them. Areas to the west – shown in different shades of red – moved away from the satellite, mostly down or west, by 8 inches (20 cm).

The two large ground motion regions (dark red and blue) are both west of the epicenter and indicate that the fault rupture continued west from the starting point. The gray areas are open water or thick vegetation that prevents the device from measuring the change between satellite images. Scientists use these maps to build detailed models of fault slippage at depth and associated ground movements to better understand the impact on future earthquake activity.

Sentinel-1 data was provided by ESA. The image contains modified 2021 Copernicus data, which has been processed by the European Space Agency and NASA/JPL. The NISAR (NASA-ISRO SAR) mission in development will obtain data similar to that of the large-scale Sentinel-1 when launched.
