A Baton Rouge nun seeks help to help her sisters after the massive earthquake in Haiti

Baton Rouge, Los Angeles (WAFB) – Nearly 2,000 people have been killed, and nearly 10,000 injured after a massive 7.2-magnitude earthquake shook Haiti over the weekend.

Among the survivors are three nuns with ties to Baton Rouge.

“Oh my God. My heart hit the ground,” said Sister Martha Abshire.

Father Abshire with the Franciscan missionaries tells Our Lady that three of their sisters live there as part of a health care project in Haiti.

She believes the two sisters were heading to mass near the epicenter when the earthquake struck. Their monastery and hospital were badly damaged.

“We got news about them on the way from France. They managed to go to an internet café somewhere and spoke to our sisters in France and told them they were in a car when the earthquake hit and that saved them,” Abshire said.

Abshire says it was a sore reminder of where she was more than a decade ago.

“I had this pain in my stomach because I was there for the 2010 earthquake, we were 75 miles away and we felt it great,” Abshire said.

Their biggest problem now is trying to get the sister’s help and a new place to live.

On top of trying to fight roadblocks to send help, they are also dealing with the effects of Tropical Storm bliss.

“They have a lot of thugs and gangs blocking roads with guns, and when they are cornered, I talk about trees and all sorts of things. They already announced yesterday that they will now allow humanitarian aid that they will not cross the barrier,” Abshire said.

Abshire says that as long as they keep their faith strong, her sisters will do just fine.

“In the times when I worried about being kidnapped, I put my whole life in the hands of Jesus, and I told him if that was the case, it would be. There’s no point in worrying and getting sick because of something that hasn’t happened yet. So you don’t fall victim, don’t let For the situation to deceive you.
