An outbreak of COVID-19 has been declared in an elderly home in Victoria. Island Health 63 new cases
Island Health declared an outbreak of COVID-19 on Friday among three staff members of an elderly home at Sunset Lodge in Victoria. This is because the state recorded the highest number of cases in four months.
Outbreaks bring the total number of outbreaks in care, support, and independent living in the state to 15.
“At this point, the population is experiencing no symptoms and the risk remains low,” says Island Health. The three staff members who tested positive are quarantined at home.
The region reported 63 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, bringing the number of active cases to 555.
Island Health does not state whether three staff members have been vaccinated because it is “individual individual and personal health information” due to privacy concerns.
Sunset Lodge is located on 952 Arm Street and is owned and operated by The Salvation Army.
According to health officials, communication with residents, families and staff is progressing. It brings in extra staff and works with the lodge to identify someone else who may have been exposed.
Health officials said all Sunset Lodge staff and residents are screened twice daily. The COVID-19 test is performed on staff and symptomatic residents. Health officials did not say whether the staff had been promptly inspected before the outbreak.
All work staff must wear a mask.
According to Island Health, admission, movement, and social visits will be withheld and resident and staff movement will be restricted during the outbreak. Important visitors can continue to meet the resident.
As the number of cases continues to skyrocket, the state reported a new case of 867 for COVID-19 on Friday.
Three more died, for a total of 1,807. The death toll was all Interior Health, which recorded the maximum number of 350 new cases.
There are 5,657 active cases, including 159 in the hospital, 84 of whom are in the intensive care unit.
The state said that completely unvaccinated people accounted for 82 percent of infections and nearly 86 percent of hospitalizations between August 12 and 25.
Nearly 76% of eligible BC residents over the age of 12 have been fully vaccinated with two doses of COVID-19 vaccine, and nearly 84% have received at least one dose.
