HVO detects renewed earthquake and deformation activity at Kilauea Summit

Scientists from the US Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said Friday morning that seismic activity and ground deformation have resumed under the southern portion of the Kilauea Summit caldera within the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The observatory said that the rate of ground deformation began to rise again around 6 pm Thursday and was followed by an increase in seismic activity after 8:30 pm, and the activity renewed almost at the same location where the last earthquake swarm occurred between Monday and Wednesday inside and south of a volcanic crater.

“The combination of these observations indicates a second pulse of intrusive activity,” the observatory said on Friday.

Most earthquakes in the regenerative swarm lie between 0.6 and 1.8 miles below the surface, similar to the initial swarm. Nearly 200 earthquakes were recorded between 8:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday morning, less than half the number of earthquakes detected in the initial swarm. The largest recorded earthquake was a magnitude 2.8, and the majority of the earthquakes were less than 1.0 on the Richter scale.

During that time period, 16 small earthquakes occurred per hour, with a peak rate of 24 detected earthquakes per hour. Since 5 a.m. Friday, the observatory said, the average seismic rate has fallen to about six detected earthquakes per hour.

“As of this statement, earthquake and ground deformation rates in the Kilauea summit area appear to be declining. In addition, there was no indication of earthquake migration toward the surface or change in deformation that might indicate shallowness of the intrusive source,” the observatory said.

The Kilauea Volcano Alert Level and Aviation Color Code remained in ADVISORY/YELLOW as of Friday afternoon.
