Strong earthquake hits southern Iran, felt by residents of Dubai

A strong earthquake with an initial magnitude of 6.4 struck near Bandar Abbas in southern Iran, local officials and witnesses said, and tremors were felt as far away as Dubai, Qatar, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Only a few details are currently available.

The epicenter of the quake, which occurred at 3:38 pm local time (1208 GMT), was 64 kilometers (39 miles) northwest of Bandar Abbas, the capital of Hormozgan province, or 278 kilometers (178 miles) north of Dubai.

The Iran Seismological Center said Sunday’s initial quake had a magnitude of 6.4, while the US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake had a slight decrease of 6.3. The earthquake struck about 18 kilometers below the surface, making it a shallow earthquake.

The shaking was felt across the region, including Dubai, Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, parts of Oman and Saudi Arabia. No details of damage or injuries were immediately known.
