New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has earned a reputation for staying calm in the face of the crisis. But the earthquake was the first thing on Monday morning as she was interviewed live on TV that looked like an unusually difficult way to start a week.

“We have a slight earthquake here,” Ardern Ryan Bridge, a host of Newshub AM Show, is live on air. Her eyes were closed to the ceiling of the room in which she was standing in the New Zealand Parliament in Wellington, and she remained in place when the TV camera was shaken.

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit northwest of Levin, a town about an hour’s drive north of the capital, at a depth of 37 km, according to the country’s Seismological Agency. No injuries or structural damage was reported.

“A fairly decent jolt here, but if you see things moving behind, the hive is moving more than most,” said Ardern, referring to the name given to the main parliament building, when the room was revolving around it.

The earthquake lasted about 15 seconds and was felt by tens of thousands of New Zealanders as far away as Auckland in the north and Dunedin on the South Island.

“We are fine,” she told Jordan Bridge, noting that she was ready to continue the interview as the earthquake neared its end. “I’m not under any hanging lights.”

Jordan was later told by reporters that the first thing he thought about in the room when she started shaking was “Are you serious?”

Ardern, like most New Zealanders, is used to earthquakes. New Zealand is located on the seismically active “ring of fire”, which is an arc of volcanoes and ocean trenches extending 40 thousand kilometers around most of the Pacific Ocean.

In 2010 and 2011, two major earthquakes destroyed the southern city of Christchurch Island, killing 185 people. In 2016, another one near Kaikoura town caused damage throughout the upper part of the southern island and the bottom of the north, with some of Wellington’s major buildings still being closed due to the earthquake’s strength.

There was no such damage on Monday, even near the epicenter.

But Finance Minister Grant Robertson said in a tweet on Twitter that the earthquake “is not what we need now.”

Others were more dramatic. A Twitter user said: “I think after the earthquake and plague, the next blow is frogs.”

Civil defense officials had nothing to say about the frogs, but they quickly ruled out the risk of a tsunami.

Wellington board member Fleur Fitzsimmons reported a strange coincidence during the rumble.

“Eek, by phone to the mayor talking about strengthening the earthquake for the central library when the earthquake struck! #Eqnz #Wellington,” she wrote on Twitter. The capital’s main library was forced out of use in 2019 when it was found to be unsafe.
