A 6.1-magnitude earthquake hits the border area between Myanmar and India

NEW DELHI/YANGON (Xinhua) – An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale hit the border region between India and Myanmar Friday morning, according to the Indian National Center for Seismology (NCS).

She added that the earthquake occurred at 5.15 am.

“The epicenter of the earthquake was in Myanmar, which is located at 22.77 degrees north latitude and 93.23 degrees east longitude,” she added. “The depth of the earthquake was 12 kilometers.”

Myanmar’s Department of Meteorology and Hydrology said the quake hit the region eight kilometers northeast of Thantlang town, Chin state, at a depth of 46 kilometers.

The NCS of India said tremors were felt in the northeastern part of India including the states of Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram, Assam and even Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal.

Many shocked people reported the tremors on social media platforms. Shraddha Kaushal Ganguly from Kolkata wrote, “It felt so strong in Kolkata.”

A second earthquake measuring 2.9 on the Richter scale was also reported at 5.53 am local time.

There were no immediate reports of casualties in the earthquake on both sides of India and Myanmar.

Meanwhile, Myanmar reported 493 new cases of Covid-19 with a daily positive rate of 2.1 percent in the past 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health on Friday.

The ministry said the total number of COVID-19 infections rose to 520,706 on Friday.

Nine new deaths were reported in the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 19,067.

According to the ministry, the daily positivity rate for Covid-19 has been less than three percent for nine consecutive days.

A total of 494,748 patients had been discharged from hospitals after full recovery as of Friday.

Myanmar detected its first two positive cases of Covid-19 on March 23 last year.
