Scientists monitor a swarm earthquake off the coast of Oregon. More than 50 earthquakes have been recorded

More than 50 earthquakes struck off the coast of Oregon Tuesday and Wednesday — the first “earthquake swarm” in that region in more than a decade, according to the US Geological Survey.

The two largest earthquakes recorded 5.8 and 5.5 on the Richter scale, according to the US Geological Survey. But scientists said there was no cause for concern. The tremors occurred at a known fault line 200 miles offshore, and the sliding motion of tectonic plates is generally not capable of causing tsunamis or more earthquakes, said Joanne Gomberg, a research geophysicist with the US Geological Survey in Seattle.

“This isn’t terribly unusual,” Gomberg said. “They are being watched, but so far nothing seems very unusual.”

The quakes began around 5:20 a.m. Tuesday and continued into Wednesday afternoon. Its size ranges from 3.4 to 5.8.

“Because (the earthquakes) are happening offshore, they’ve only caused a few reports of light shaking” in Oregon, the USGS said in a tweet.

The swarm was centered around the Blanco fault, a “shift fault” similar to the San Andreas fault, in which two tectonic plates slide side by side to create what are known as “slide earthquakes,” Gomberg said.

“It’s not worrisome at all,” Gomberg said.

She said the last time an earthquake occurred within 50 km of a swarm this week was in 2009. Previously, swarms hit the area in 2008 and 2003, with earthquakes of similar magnitude.

The fault zone is so far from the coast that the USGS does not have seismic monitoring equipment in the area, Gomberg said, and it was unclear when the quake swarm might subside. Swarms can last anywhere from a few days to several months, according to the USGS.
