Influenza hospitalizations are increasing in Rapid City
Rapid City, SD (KELO) — Not only COVID-19 cases are on the rise, but influenza is also spreading throughout South Dakota. Recently, Monument Health in Rapid City has been busy with flu patients.
Whether it’s COVID-19, the flu, or any other health problem, Monument Hospital is at full capacity.
“This is what we knew happened in a pandemic. Many people who receive care on a daily basis either did not seek care or postponed it, delaying their care. Backlogs are now starting to build up, said Dr. Shanker Kula, vice president of medical care.
Since the start of the flu season, Monument Health has had 37 flu patients here. This is a 54% increase compared to last year’s flu season.
Ty White, director of infection control, says that the peak month for influenza in South Dakota is usually February.
“So this is really early to see this amount of flu in the community. Last year there wasn’t much flu season, it was very mild and almost non-existent, but the year before that increased considerably. And we’re outperforming it now, so I hope this is early in the season, but I’m not sure yet, “White said.
One thing health officials know is that it’s never too late to get a flu shot.
“The easiest way to prevent symptoms, hospitalization and infection is to get both flu and COVID vaccines so that we can keep you at home and stay healthy and out of the hospital. You can, “White said.
Influenza vaccines are not 100% effective. However, Monument Health states that it is the best way to prevent serious symptoms.
