5.3-magnitude earthquake strikes Gökçeada, western Turkey

An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale hit western Turkey’s Gökyada district on Sunday.

According to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the epicenter was about 125 kilometers (78 miles) from the island, which is one of the counties of the western Çanakkale province.

The earthquake, which occurred at 2:48 pm local time, caused no damage or injuries, according to initial reports. Gokciada Governor Sirhat Dogan told Anadolu Agency (AA) that the tremors were felt “only slightly”.

Turkey lies on several fault lines, with most of the country located on the Anatolian tectonic plate, which lies between two major plates, the Eurasian and African, and the smaller, Arabian plates.

As the larger African and Arab plates shift, Turkey is literally under pressure, while the Eurasian plate impedes any movement to the north.

Turkey went through a fragile period last year, experiencing an average of three earthquakes per hour. Given that the risk of more earthquakes still exists, the state is striving to protect its buildings as a precautionary measure in the event of a “major earthquake”.

Statistics show that 23,753 earthquakes were recorded over the past year. In other words, about 65 earthquakes of magnitude in one day occurred on average in the country.

Earthquakes are monitored by 1,143 AFAD-operated seismic stations across the country, although some universities also operate their own.
