Haiti: Fifteen years after the earthquake, let's keep supporting people!

Fifteen years of steadfastness

On January 12, 2010, Haiti was hit by a powerful earthquake measuring 7 on the Richter scale, which killed more than 220,000 people, injured about 300,000 people, and left 1.5 million people homeless. The resilience of the Haitian people was also repeatedly tested thereafter by a series of social and economic crises and natural disasters such as hurricanes and more earthquakes.

To mark the 15th anniversary of the 2010 earthquake Development & Peace – Caritas Canada is raising funds for Haiti as a gesture of solidarity with the Haitian people, who have been facing disproportionate violence from street gangs over the past year.

We are also allocating $100,000 in emergency aid. This amount is in addition to the $180,000 approved last summer for four projects through which our partners are providing some relief to people.

Political instability, violence and food insecurity

Unfortunately, as political instability and gang violence continue, people's need for help is increasing. By September 2024, the International Organization for Migration estimated that more than 702,000 people had been internally displaced (see report in French). Initially, most of the displaced fled south to escape the gangs that were based in Port-au-Prince. Now, violence and displacement have become more widespread.

The Mercy Corps report highlights four key challenges linked to the impact of gang violence on food systems. These include inflation resulting from broken supply chains; mass displacement and economic pressures; disrupting agricultural production and land use; And the unexpected closure of ports and airports.

Other organizations' reports on the situation also revealed some startling numbers:

5.4 million people (more than half the population) face acute food insecurity. $1.34 billion will be needed over the next two years to meet immediate needs resulting from the security crisis. Our partners in Haiti's southern peninsula are witnessing a continuing influx of displaced people fleeing the violence in Port-au-Prince. These displaced families, often headed by a single parent, sought refuge with relatives in rural areas who were themselves struggling to provide food for their families.
