Team Viper was eventually forced to return to the United States without finding a survivor. But nearly 6,500 people were saved with the help of search and rescue teams from around the world.

By chance, Chusset ended up having a long conversation with a woman whose husband, a security guard, had been buried for eight days in the collapsed basement of a shopping mall. He described himself as feeling overjoyed when he later learned that the woman’s husband had been brought out alive.

“She had two children, and the age difference was the same as my child, so it hit home for me there,” Chusset told Ars.

Carnegie Mellon University researchers have several ideas about how to improve the snake robot for potential future deployments. One of their priorities is to attach light-based sensors that can help perform 3D point cloud mapping of the snake’s environment, giving the robot operator and search and rescue teams a better sense of how to guide the robot under collapsed buildings.

After their return, team members also wrote notes about their experiences to compile a to-do list for any future unexpected trips. “The important thing is what to package and how to package it,” Chusset said.

Snake robots are still research prototypes and not operational tools for search and rescue. But Chausset praised his team’s previous experience and training in search and rescue scenarios using snake robots, which included courses to break and repair the robots to improve them. He also highlighted his lab’s philosophy of devoting time and energy to building robust robots capable of operating reliably beyond a few research demonstrations.

“My students and staff have taken the position of: Let’s make sure these systems are as robust as possible,” Chusset said. “So, when we do our research, we’re not constantly fighting with a robot to operate things.”
