Azores volcanic island hit by thousands of earthquakes

Authorities on a Portuguese island in the mid-Atlantic that has been hit by thousands of small earthquakes in recent days began evacuating people living at the bottom of coastal cliffs on Thursday as fears grew of a stronger earthquake or a volcanic eruption.

Since Saturday, more than 2,000 earthquakes, with a magnitude between 1.6 and 3.3 on the Richter scale, have been recorded on the volcanic island of São Jorge in the Azores archipelago, according to the region’s CIVISA Volcanic Seismic Monitoring Center.

Small earthquakes, which have not yet caused any damage, have been reported along the island’s volcanic fissure in Manadas, which last erupted in 1808. A major earthquake hit the island in 1980, causing extensive damage.

CIVISA raised the volcanic alert status to 4 from 5, which means there is a “real possibility of an eruption,” and said the number of earthquakes was above normal levels.

Those in hospital or nursing homes in Vilas municipality, which is likely to be the worst affected area, have already been moved to Calheta on the other side of the island.

Vilas Mayor Luis Silvera said on Wednesday that plans to evacuate the rest of the residents to Calheta or to other islands will only be activated if necessary.

A municipality spokesperson told Reuters that those living on the so-called “Vagas” island, which are small plains originally created by lava or landslides at the bottom of the cliffs, will be preemptively evacuated. There are about 40 fajas in São Jorge.

The evacuation comes after the Azores archipelago activated its own emergency plan.

São Jorge, one of the nine islands that make up the Azores, is home to about 8,400 people and is part of the archipelago’s central group, which includes the popular tourist destinations of Faial and Pico, which are also volcanic.

Azores President Jose Manuel Bolero visited Sao Jorge Thursday morning and said “everything is ready” to evacuate people, adding that the government was also working to increase the number of commercial flights.

The authorities told residents where to go in case of need, and said alerts would be sent to residents using social media, the local radio station and by ringing church bells on the island.
