Southern Trust Event Center designated as earthquake exposed

The Southern Trust Events Center has been classified as earthquake-prone, but the council says the situation will be resolved as part of upcoming redevelopment work.

On Monday, the Timaru County Council confirmed that a recent comprehensive engineering report showed the Timaru Building’s overall building rating of less than 34 percent, meaning it has been classified as earthquake-prone.

She says the building’s overall score is based on the lowest score for any part of the structure.

While the gymnasium, lounge, and hockey club rooms are below 34 percent of the importance level (IL3), the main courts, entry foyers, and front offices are all “much higher than this.”

Eric Barnes, acting director of the community services group at Timaru County Council, said the building’s earthquake status does not mean it is dangerous to occupy or use.

“We take the safety of those who use our facilities very seriously,” Barnes said.

“After this detailed evaluation, we are confident that the community can continue to use this popular sports facility safely until the upgrade work begins.”

“Exposure to earthquakes does not mean that a building is not safe to use on a daily basis, it just means that it will not perform as well as a brand new building during a major earthquake.

“Under the earthquake-prone building provisions of the Building Code, the council has 25 years to resolve these issues, but they will all be resolved much sooner as part of the Aorangi Park redevelopment project.”

He said the building will remain open, accessible for sports and events, and use by tenants as usual.

“The majority of users will not see any changes, but there will be some restrictions on the type of event that can be hosted in the lounge area.”

As part of the recent long-term plan, the board made the decision to undertake the development of the Orangery Park and the stadium between 2023 and 2025.

Construction work will start in 2023/2024.
