approximately 30 small, shallow earthquakes under Lake Paulina; Seismologists see no cause for concern

However, it is the “most significant seismic sequence” since the sensors were installed in 2012

VANCOVER, WA (KTVZ) – Nearly 30 shallow earthquakes – too small to feel – have occurred in the past week and a half beneath the eastern shore of Lake Paulina in Newberry Volcano, but USGS seismologists said Monday they’re not a cause for concern and are “Most likely as a result of fluid movement in the hydrothermal system.”

In their media statement, the seismologists described it as a “slight increase in seismic activity” and said there were no signs of ground deformation or “other indications of disturbance”, so the area’s alert level remained at “normal”.

It’s been a decade since Cascades Volcano Observatory scientists installed eight seismic and GPS sensors at the extinct volcano. The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network has recorded several hundred earthquakes since then, “making Newbury one of the most seismically active volcanoes in the Cascade Range.”

The most recent small earthquake swarm—including over 100 smaller earthquakes, too small to be located—”is the most significant seismic sequence ‘at the site,’ in terms of longevity and event rate, since the gear was installed in 2022.”

“However, given that Newbury has a relatively high background rate of earthquakes, seismologists do not consider the current earthquakes a significant departure from normal activity,” they said, adding that they would “monitor the data closely in the coming days and weeks and release further updates as appropriate.”

Here’s the full statement and links to more information.

Volcano Observatory Information Statement Geological Survey Monday, April 4, 2022, 11:31 AM PDT (Monday, April 4, 2022, 18:31 UTC) Newbury Volcano (No. 322110) 43°43’19″N 121°13 ’44” West Summit elevation 7,986 ft (2,434 m) Current Volcano Alert Level: Normal Current Aviation Color Code: Green

Beginning March 24, seismologists at the USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory (CVO) and the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN) observed a slight uptick in seismic activity at Newberry Volcano. From March 24 through April 3, PNSN identified 29 shallow earthquakes (<2 km (1 mi) in depth) under the eastern shore of Lake Paulina. The largest earthquake was of magnitude 1.7 and occurred at 8:57 PM PDT on March 24. None of the earthquakes were large enough to be felt. No ground distortion was recorded by CVO's network of GPS stations at Newberry Volcano, and there are no other indications of disturbances. The color code and alert level for the Newberry Volcano remain Green/Normal.

In addition to the 29 earthquakes identified by PNSN, more than a hundred other earthquakes too small to be located have occurred, most of which have occurred since March 30. These small events are likely to occur in the same shallow area as larger earthquakes. All of these earthquakes occur in the area below Newberry where earthquakes occur most commonly and are likely the result of fluid movement in the hydrothermal system.

Seismic monitoring in Newberry began in 2012 when Earthquake Monitoring Center scientists installed an 8-station network of seismic sensors and a Global Positioning System (GPS) system. Several hundred earthquakes have been identified by PNSN since then, making Newbury one of the most seismically active volcanoes in the Cascade Range. The current seismicity is the most important seismic sequence that has occurred in Newbury in terms of longevity and event rate since 2012. However, because Newbury has a relatively high rate of seismicity, seismologists do not consider current earthquakes to be a significant departure from normal activity.

Scientists at CVO and PNSN will monitor the data closely in the coming days and weeks and will release more updates as necessary.

Geological context: Newberry volcano, located east of the Cascade Range and south of nearby Bend, Oregon, is one of the largest volcanoes in the contiguous United States. The shield-shaped volcano and its vast area of lava flows cover approximately 2,000 square kilometers (1,200 square miles), and extend about 120 kilometers (75 miles) from north to south and 43 kilometers (27 miles) from east to west. The most recent volcanic activity from Newberry was about 1,300 years ago when a volcanic eruption occurred from the summit of the caldera, followed by the eruption of the Big Obsidian Flow, a popular visitor attraction. The volcano has been active for about 400,000 years and exhibits diverse volcanic activity ranging from basaltic lava flows to massive caldera-forming explosive eruptions.
