A 5.8 magnitude earthquake jolted Maluku province, Indonesia, and no tsunami warning was issued

An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale hit the Indonesian province of Maluku on Tuesday, according to the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency.

The agency official, Alvart Abu Bakr, told the media that the earthquake felt with its epicenter, 126 km southwest of the Boro and shallow region, 10 km below the seabed.

The official said the earthquake had not caused a tsunami.

The National Disaster Management Agency said more than 100 houses were damaged after an earthquake measuring 6.8 struck near the northern Maluku province earlier this month.

Last year, in September, at least 23 people were killed and more than 100 others injured after a 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck the remote islands of Indonesia.

In 2018, a 7.5-magnitude earthquake and a subsequent tsunami in Palu, Sulawesi island, left more than 4,300 people dead or missing.

Nearly 60,000 people are still living in temporary housing almost a year after the double disaster, and the Red Cross last month.

In 2004, a devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 9.1 struck the coast of Sumatra and caused a tsunami killing 220,000 people across the region, including about 170,000 in Indonesia.
