S.I. Senior Spotlight: Moyes Apollon was forced to move from Haiti after the earthquake, and it affected Susan Wagner with his hard work and magic.

Staten Island, New York – Moise Apollon arrived at the doorstep of Susan Wagner when he was in tenth grade after moving from Haiti, where he was head of class.

He survived the worst earthquake in Haiti’s history in 2010. He was staying with his uncle (Jean Valerie Apollon), who unfortunately died in the aftermath of the earthquake.

“The earthquake was on January 12, 2010 at 12:53 pm. Apollon, now 19, said,“ I cannot forget this day. ”It was a difficult time.”

Apollon came to the United States two years ago with his younger sister, Sahirah, 15, to join their mother (Vadeline Apollon), who was working as a home health assistant on Staten Island.

While at Susan Wagner, he taught English by watching a TV program. However, Apollon held leadership positions such as the student government delegate, captain of science, and a member of the student advisory board of the college now for the Kingsboro Community College. He has been on the Honor List throughout his time at Susan Wagner, and has won awards for an ideal attendance. He also received membership in Arista, the branch of the Sea View School of the National Honor Society.

The average student over 92 years old, who lives in West Brighton, said he was able to thrive in Susan Wagner because he was immediately accepted by other students.

“It was a very welcoming environment and a hassle-free school,” Apollon said. “I am fit.”

Extracurricular activities: He was a member of Falcons and Tennis Teams in his last year. He enjoys performing at the annual international school festival as a member of French and Spanish clubs, and in the band in Sing. His community service includes helping teachers and ELL students during free periods, volunteering at the local community park and Staten Island Zoo.
