EQC launches earthquake awareness campaign

According to the EQC, New Zealand lies on two tectonic plates that meet off the east coast of the North Island in an area called the Hikurangi Subduction Zone. This is the largest and most active rift in New Zealand, where the Pacific plate sinks westward below the Australian plate.

The EQC said subduction zones are responsible for major earthquakes and tsunamis around the world, and communities on the East Coast are particularly at risk.

“This knowledge is very important to their Akonga and Wano,” said Georgia Macomb, East Coast LAB project lead. “A tsunami from an earthquake can arrive from the Hikurangi subduction zone in less than 15 minutes, so understanding its risks and what needs to be done builds the resilience of the entire school community.”

Last year, the promotion reached nearly 800 students across the areas of Tyrawete, Hawke’s Bay and Wellington.

“I am excited to bring this knowledge to a new group of students,” said Jack Welton, a teacher from the National Aquarium of New Zealand, who will be presenting a promotion for East Coast LAB.
