Early morning magnitude-5.1 earthquake shakes up Bay of Plenty

An early morning 5.1 magnitude earthquake has shaken up the Bay of Plenty on Tuesday.

Geonet said the quake struck offshore 10km southwest of Te Kaha at 5.29am, at a depth of 28km. It described the shaking as “strong”.

By 6am nearly 1000 people had reported feeling the quake, many from Whakatane.

GNS Science duty seismologist John Ristau said the area where the earthquake happened was “a bit of a hotspot” with 15 events of stronger than magnitude-4.0 in the past 10 years.

Geonet said the 5.1-magnitude quake struck at 5.29am on Tuesday.

“They seem to be happening in roughly the same place at roughly the same depth and it’s the same type of motion,” he said.

“There are always a lot of earthquakes in the Bay of Plenty area… But why there tends to be this cluster of earthquakes right in this particular spot, that I don’t know.”

As far as faults were concerned it wasn’t known what was going on at depths of 25-30km.

“It’s possible it’s happening on the same fault, if there is a fault there,” Ristau said.

It could be to do with a tectonic plate bending, cracking and stretching, which did not happen on what people would think of as a fault.

The type of motion involved was as if one side of a fault had moved up over the top of the other side. “Whether it happened with a fault, or whether it happened some different way; that I’m not entirely certain about.”

There had been a few aftershocks, the strongest a magnitude-3.2 event shortly before 6am, Ristau said. He did not expect many aftershocks, given the small number in the three hours after the main event.

Also earthquakes at the depth involved did not tend to have as many aftershocks as shallower events, although there were exceptions.
