A small earthquake hit Dunedin early Tuesday morning.
On social media, dozens of people reported that they woke up from the earthquake at 12.57 am.
“It was bouncy and bloody loud,” said one Twitter user.
GeoNet said the quake’s epicenter was 30 km northwest of central Dunedin, near George King Memorial Road.

The massive rift in the Alps is due to another major earthquake, and scientists have come up with a scenario for what the devastation would look like. (First published May 2018)
About 1,140 people reported feeling the quake on the GeoNet website: 559 rated the quake as “weak,” while 525 classified it as “light.”
Jonathan Hanson, seismic shift officer at GNS Science, said: “Last night’s earthquake was unusual but…unexpected.
“Over the past 20 years, there have been 15 shallow earthquakes larger than M3 around Dunedin – many of which have been felt in Dunedin – particularly in 2014 and 2015 we had M4 and M4.7 in a very similar location to our continuing overnight event.”
There were known active faults in the area, he said, “and we may not have been able to point out several more faults yet because we either haven’t observed enough activity on them or we have good field observations.”
“This activity is a good reminder that there is potential for seismic activity everywhere in New Zealand, and Dunedin is no exception.”
The University of Otago’s Department of Geology and GNS Science, the Crown Research Institute, revealed in 2017 that the closest active geological fault to Dunedin is behaving strangely and may have a “splinter line”.
The Akatore Fault extends south of the Taieri Plains and into the sea from the Taieri Mouth.
Seismologists believe that the 1974 Dunedin earthquake resulted from a rupture along a fault or faults parallel to and close to the Akator fault.
The 1974 earthquake, later assessed as a magnitude 5, led to about 3,000 claims being made to the Seismological Commission.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
