Erdoğan, Pezeshkian discuss regional peace, bilateral relations
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan spoke by phone with his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday, discussing bilateral relations as well as regional and global developments, according to a statement from Turkey’s Communications Directorate. Erdoğan welcomed the agreement reached between Iran and the United States, saying Turkey would provide all possible support to ensure a peaceful conclusion of the process.
Vigilance against sabotage
During the call, Erdoğan stressed the importance of acting cautiously against those who seek to sabotage the negotiations. He noted that taking steps to strengthen regional peace in the new period is an important and necessary undertaking, adding that Turkey would work to help its establishment. The Turkish president also stressed that Ankara will continue to take steps to improve trade, financial and energy cooperation with Iran.
Iranian commitment to diplomacy
For his part, Pezeshkian said Iran was not seeking war and was ready to continue diplomacy with the United States within the framework of international law. He appreciated the role played by regional countries, especially Pakistan and Turkey, in facilitating the MoU. Pezeshkian also said he was ready to form an intergovernmental committee to help develop economic relations between the two neighbors. The call follows the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which aims to end the US-Israeli war against Iran and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
