Trump signs new executive orders to boost quantum computing

US President Donald Trump on Monday signed two executive orders aimed at boosting quantum computing and strengthening security infrastructure to mitigate threats.

“We think this can happen by 2028,” Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, said on a call previewing these measures and referring to the quantum computer.

Quantum computing leverages the principles of quantum physics to solve complex problems many times faster than today’s fastest computers.

Trump orders development of quantum computing

The first order calls for the development of a quantum computer powerful enough to perform scientific research and tasks federal agencies with developing plans to deploy quantum technology.

The order also calls on the Pentagon to deploy quantum sensors by 2027.

The second objective is to strengthen public and private sector security systems in a post-quantum world.

The directive aims to accelerate migration processes towards post-quantum cryptography by 2031.

This part involves upgrading systems to ensure they can withstand future quantum attacks.
