Pacific authorities monitor the aftermath of the Trincala earthquake

PAKITAN, E-JAVA (Antara) – The Pacific Disaster Reduction Agency continued to monitor the aftermath of the 5.2-magnitude earthquake that rocked the southern districts of Tringalek district in East Java province on Sunday.

“So far we have not received any report of serious damage and losses in the aftermath of the earthquake, but we continue to monitor the situation on the ground,” said Erwin Andriatmoko, acting head of the agency.

Although there was no significant damage and casualties, he ordered his men to remain vigil, urging the local population to beware of the aftershocks of the earthquake that frequently occur in their areas.

He said the epicenter of the quake was located about 23 km south of Munjungan sub-district of Tringalak district or about 64 km from downtown Pachtan at a depth of 103 km.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), residents near the epicenter did not feel the quake that hit Tringalc at 6:55 a.m. local time.

He added that those in other areas, including Blitar and Kediri, could feel the earthquakes.

Earthquakes regularly rock different parts of Indonesia as the country lies on the Pacific belt, also known as the Ring of Fire, where many tectonic plates meet and cause frequent volcanic and seismic activities.

Aceh was hit by its deadliest earthquake, followed by a tsunami on December 26, 2004.

It is reported that the disaster, which also affected certain coastal areas in countries such as Thailand, Sri Lanka and India, killed about 230,000 people.
