Death toll exceeds 4,500, Operation “Baraka” brings hope to Venezuelan earthquake survivors

The death toll from the two earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24 has risen to more than 4,500, with more bodies discovered under the rubble. Survivors, many of whom are without homes, now face the risk of disease due to lack of sanitation, clean water and lack of medical care.

CBN’s Operation Blessing is working on the ground in the worst-hit areas of the country, helping those who have lost everything. One such place is the coastal city of Naigwata, where almost all the buildings have collapsed or become too dangerous to live in.

Many people like Therese Delmore have lost loved ones. “My mother-in-law’s sister, my husband’s aunt, and a long-time family friend,” she said.

Operation Blessing serves this grief-stricken community that has so far received only limited humanitarian assistance despite their great need.

Naiguata is one of 40 Venezuelan cities where Operation Blessing is providing relief. Nationwide, the ministry provided nearly 15,000 meals such as freshly cooked hamburgers, nutritious salads and bottled water. Crews have also begun production of two water treatment systems to help provide a more sustainable clean water supply.

“It’s really amazing,” said earthquake survivor Karen Alvarez. “God bless you all.”

Operation Blessing’s medical teams meet people’s needs and provide vital medicines. Freddy Escobar, a survivor of the quake, said the help came at the right time.

“I suffer from epilepsy and varicose ulcers,” he said. “It was a bit difficult to get the pills, but thank God the doctor came and gave them to me.”

Teams provide temporary housing with workers setting up many tents. Earthquake victims especially appreciate the free hygiene kits containing essentials such as toilet paper, sanitizing wipes and toothpaste.

Many parents are concerned about the psychological well-being of their children. That’s why people like Yunlby Gallardo appreciate the way Operation Blessing workers play games with kids, offering them stuffed animals and other toys, as well as candy.
