A Westlake student rides a bike for 24 hours straight to help earthquake victims in Venezuela

AUSTIN, Texas – A high school student is raising money for Venezuelans in crisis by riding a stationary bike at Amy’s Ice Cream Shop for 24 hours straight.

Customers visiting Amy’s Ice Cream and Phil’s Ice House on S. Lamar today could see Andres Manduca, a rising senior at Westlake High School, walking around the yard with a 24-hour countdown timer.

Born in Venezuela, Andres moved to the United States with his family when he was a young child, but returns regularly to visit his family who still live there.

Last month, two massive earthquakes struck off the coast of Venezuela. CBS reported this morning, July 20, that the death toll has risen to more than 5,200 people, and more than 16,000 injured have been reported according to the Associated Press.

In an effort to help victims from more than 2,000 miles away, he turned to his passion for endurance sports to make an impact. In addition to enjoying cycling and running, Andres is also a competitive rower.

“This is my kind of cycling,” he said before starting the charity bike. “I love doing things like this. It’s kind of my way of helping out.”

Andres teamed up with Amy’s Ice Creams to set up his bike and stream his day-long ride on Twitch.

All donations through the live stream and on his fundraising page will go to World Central Kitchen, a non-profit organization providing fresh meals to people suffering from humanitarian, climate and societal crises around the world.

When he came to Amy with the idea, Jess Banks, director of giving and outreach coordinator for Amy’s Ice Creams and Phil’s Ice House, said they had the idea.

“We love young people who have innovation and creative ideas to impact society in their own way,” Banks said. “Amy’s Ice Creams and Phil’s Ice House love being rooted in the Austin community, but when we can reach out and impact globally, I think that’s really special and we love those opportunities.”

Although the crisis is physically distant, it is already resonating in society.

“When he mentioned the cause of the Venezuela earthquake victims, it really spoke to our community specifically,” Banks said. “We have workers in our restaurants, both Phil’s and Amy’s, who were affected by those earthquakes and family members who are still dealing with that.”

When asked if he felt nervous before the trip, Andres simply said he was “excited.”

His mother, Trillus Mago, remembers his energy and lively spirit from a young age. She stated that he is no stranger to long bike rides, having completed 12 and even 18 hour cycles in the past.

“Whatever he wants, he goes and gets it,” she said. “Nothing is impossible for him.”
