A 5.1 magnitude earthquake hits Balut Island in Davao Occidental

MANILA, Philippines – A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck the waters off Balut Island in Davao Occidental on Monday, July 20.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the earthquake occurred at 5:40 p.m. at a depth of 10 kilometers.

It was tracked 406 kilometers south of 24 degrees east of Balut Island in Sarangani town in Davao Occidental.

Phivolcs recorded no intensity, but on Sunday 19 July, a 4.5 magnitude earthquake also struck the waters off the island, with seismologists recording Intensity II in General Santos City, where Phivolcs Intensity III was also reported.

Yesterday’s earthquake was recorded as a magnitude 7.8 aftershock off Sarangani Beach and a magnitude 6.5 on the Richter scale off Davao Occidental Beach in June.

Last Saturday, July 18, the island was also hit by a 5.6 magnitude earthquake. /jpv
