Idaho artists learn from Hollywood professionals at the Idaho Art Lab
ST. ANTHONY, Idaho (KIFI) – Science fiction and art collide this summer in St. Anthony at the Idaho Art Lab
Don Lanning brought his experience working on the show “Kenobi” to this year’s “Hollywood FX class.”
He says the lab is creating a powerful creative force in eastern Idaho.
This effort is to bring something brand new to Idaho,” Lanning said. “It’s the idea that we have a special place here in the shadow of the Tetons where you can come one-on-one. head with me. I can share some of my hard-learned things with you.”
The lab has hosted guest artists since 2003. But, according to lab directors, Hollywood FX artists bring something hard to find in eastern Idaho.
A lot of times, especially in eastern Idaho, an artist works so much in realism that they don’t have much of an opportunity to get whimsical, imaginative sci-fi and we bring the artists who it’s everything they do,” Art Lab Executive said director Kara Hidalgo.
Even professionals find they have something to learn. For example, Malynda Cooper is locally known for sculpting the Idaho State University Bengal Tiger. She says the course helped her refine her techniques.
I don’t do a lot of detail work on my pieces,” Cooper said. “I don’t do a lot of deep wrinkles and tons of hair like that. Don was kind enough to teach me different techniques on how to get great wrinkles and how to get good direction and stuff like that.
Each of the artists worked to sculpt something different and unique. Lanning says his students learn best when they shape their own path.
My best chance of teaching you something in our classroom context is to explore what you already love. So if you like werewolves, come make a werewolf. I never, ever choose the subject of what you’re going to do in class. You choose it. And then I share with you the tools, techniques and methods with which to come forward,” Lanning said.
The Art Lab still has a lot to do this summer. Next week, they begin work on building a 9-foot-tall bison, for the Pioneer Day Parade.
Then in August, the lab offers another Hollywood FX art course.
