India delivers second batch of aid to earthquake-stricken Afghanistan

India delivered the second consignment of relief aid on Friday to support the Afghan people who have been hard hit by the earthquake that hit the eastern part of the country this week, The Print reports.

The relief batch to arrive in Kabul is the second in two days, and was delivered in the wake of the devastating earthquake that killed more than 1,000 people.

“The second consignment of earthquake relief aid provided by India to the people of Afghanistan arrives in Kabul,” External Affairs Ministry spokeswoman Arindam Bagshi said in a tweet.

Relief aid consists of basic items including family tents, sleeping bags, blankets, sleeping mats, etc.

The relief shipment will be delivered to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) and the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS) in Kabul.

“Following the tragic earthquake that struck Afghanistan on June 22, 2022 and caused massive destruction and loss of precious lives, the Government of India, as the true first responder, dispatched 27 tons of emergency relief aid on two flights to the people,” Middle East Airlines said in a statement.

The statement added: “As always, India stands in solidarity with the people of Afghanistan, with whom we share centuries-old ties, and remains deeply committed to providing immediate relief assistance to the Afghan people.”

India on Thursday delivered its first shipment of support to the earthquake-affected Afghan nationals. India has also deployed a team at the embassy in Kabul to coordinate the efforts of stakeholders to deliver humanitarian aid.

The Taliban welcomed India’s decision to return its technical team to continue humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan.

“The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan welcomes India’s decision to return the diplomats and technical team to their embassy in Kabul to continue their relations with the Afghan people and their humanitarian assistance,” Taliban spokesman Abdul Qahar Balkhi said in a statement on Thursday.

Major relief efforts are continuing in the wake of the massive earthquake that hit Paktika province in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

So far, about 1,000 people have been killed in Barmal and Jian districts of Paktika province, and Sabra district of Khost province. In addition, at least 1,455 people were injured in three of the six worst-affected regions of Barmal, Jaén and Sibera – many of them seriously.

Moreover, nearly 1,500 homes have now been verified as destroyed and damaged in Jian District, Paktika Province.

Immediate humanitarian aid was sent to the affected areas on June 22, and included 10 tons of medical supplies sufficient for 5,400 surgical operations and medical treatment covering 36,000 people for three months by the World Health Organization.
