Foreign Secretary announces support for Gaza through new child medical evacuation and support for Palestinians going to top UK universities
The government supports talented students from Gaza to receive scholarships at British universities. The government is promoting new evacuations for critically ill patients who need specialist NHS care. The announcement is part of the UK Government’s ongoing response to provide immediate support and support the rebuilding of Palestinian society amid the humanitarian catastrophe.
Young people in Gaza whose education has been disrupted by conflict will be supported to study safely at the UK’s best universities.
In a written ministerial statement to parliament today, the Foreign Secretary explained that this will help a group of outstanding students who receive full scholarships and comply with immigration regulations leave Gaza to continue their studies in the UK.
They ensure talented young people and adults can continue their education, building on the more than 100 full scholarship students the government has supported to come to the UK this academic year.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said:
The UK must continue to support students and injured children from Palestine.
Talented young people across Gaza must not be denied the opportunity to study due to the dire circumstances and restrictions they still face. We will continue to operate special arrangements to help Chevening Scholars and other students gain entry into world-class British universities to support the next generation of Palestinian leaders. We are also building on similar evacuation efforts last year to help the most vulnerable children leave Gaza and access specialist health care on the NHS.
The situation in Gaza remains serious, with ongoing restrictions on the flow of aid, unsanitary conditions and inadequate access to health services. Hospitals are either destroyed or only partially functioning, and more than 1,000 Palestinians have reportedly died since the ceasefire was announced. New international energy is urgently needed to revive the 20-point peace plan and pursue a two-state solution that provides stability and peace for both Israelis and Palestinians.
This group includes a number of Chevening Scholars. This prestigious program, funded by the Foreign Office, helps secure the future of the next generation of Palestinian leaders by awarding fully-funded master’s degree scholarships to individuals with leadership potential.
The statement also described new evacuations of critically ill children with their immediate families in need of specialist medical assistance in the UK, following a brief disruption due to local conflict.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire, with many people in need of urgent medical assistance. Most hospitals in Gaza are no longer functioning properly after nearly three years of war, and many key supplies remain lacking.
In 2025, the intergovernmental task force supported 50 sick and injured children to leave Gaza with their immediate families and receive specialist care in NHS hospitals across the UK.
Education Minister Bridget Phillipson said:
Behind every place is a person whose education has been disrupted by this terrible conflict.
This government is committed to helping Gaza students return to a safe and stable learning environment. It restores not only education, but also dignity and opportunity.
Education is a lifeline. It restores hope, unlocks potential and builds a foundation for the future. We will continue to stand with those whose futures have been destroyed and do our best to help them rebuild.
The UK is working with the World Health Organization (WHO) to identify patients in urgent need and connect them with specialist care in the UK.
The government continues to pressure Israel to allow people in urgent medical need to temporarily leave Gaza for treatment.
All passengers arriving in the UK will undergo security screening and provide biometric information before travelling.
We will contact the background college where the eligible student is located to provide further guidance on next steps. Due to the complexity of the situation, timelines are uncertain and there can be no assurances that the government will support the evacuation of some students’ eligible dependents under immigration rules. Full eligibility criteria will be announced in due course.
James Murray, Secretary of State for Health and Secretary of State for Social Care, said:
No one can help but be troubled by the devastating impact the war has had on the children of Gaza. Every child deserves the opportunity to heal, play, and dream again.
These young patients witnessed horrors no child should ever see. But it marks the beginning of the journey to recovery and reflects the best values of the NHS: compassion, care and professionalism.
Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood said:
This country proudly provides a safe harbor for those in need.
I am proud that the government is providing medical assistance and new lives to suffering children in the Gaza Strip.
