The White House Trolls Taylor Swift’s Wedding on Instagram (Sort of)

The White House shifted gears with Taylor Swift on Friday, posting a meme appropriating the Swift-Travis Kelce wedding at Madison Square Garden.

In an Instagram post Friday evening, the White House parodied the garden’s purple digital billboard depicting Swift and Kelce’s “JUST&T Married” by replacing it with the message “Trump is your president,” accompanied by similar text “It happened!” — an addition that only makes sense if you think about it for less than two seconds.

The post follows one from Thursday night in which a collage of all-American images like Iwo Jima and the Miracle on Ice is dominated by an image of Trump, under the caption “America’s Eras Tour,” parodying Swift’s poster for the giant 2023 concert. It even included Taylor’s line “It’s a long time coming line” from that barnstormer.

The specter of a wedding on a national holiday seemed to irritate a president sensitive to Swift: the White House also released two videos on Friday about X-rated moments in American history with a reuse of Swift. One proclaimed “The Next in America’s Eras Tour” while another touted “America’s Greatest Hits, One Era at a Time.”

Compared to some of the other celebrity stuff Trump has engaged in — just this week, he released an AI video of himself as a doctor treating Julia Roberts and Robert De Niro for “Trump Derangement Syndrome” — it came off as rather tame and even had an air of begrudging blessing. There is a reason for this.

Stalking liberal movie stars is a safe bet for the president and an easy win with his base. Going after Swift, however, requires more of a shade for Trump, who knows that many people in swing states where he supports candidates admire her and her liberal views, and that a war with her could result in a vote against him. That’s why he said he wished the couple well (but also predicted they wouldn’t last).

While it may or may not have been intentional, Swift’s choice of a large, multi-musician party over July 4 weekend, which Trump had envisioned for his own concert ambitions, may also have been an affront. The president had planned a big concert for Freedom 250, but soon saw even musicians like Martina McBride and Bret Michaels — hardly progressive firebrands — drop out because they didn’t want to be associated with the partisan celebration.

Meanwhile, at Garden Friday, Stevie Nicks and Paul McCartney planned to take the stage alongside the country’s biggest pop star. And in front of a who’s who of liberal artists, in what will surely be the first pop concert in the world to feature a marriage declaration from Billy Madison.

Swift seems to have an unusual ability to go to Trump’s house, to rent for free, to live in his mind. After Trump posted a 2024 deepfake of Swift supporting him against Kamala Harris, she clarified that she hadn’t, prompting him to post: “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!”

Although she has remained largely silent this term, Swift spoke out strongly against Trump at the height of the BLM protests in 2020, accusing him of “stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism throughout your presidency” and vowing that he would be voted out of office in the fall. Trump responded with a series of comments about liking her less and less; he would later say that her liberal views would lead her to “pay a price…on the market,” an amount that she does not appear to spend.

Ironically, Swift’s 1,000-person wedding, complete with musical performances involving the host on a large stage, is exactly the kind of spectacle Trump might enjoy if he were overseeing it.
