Trump kicks off America’s 250th birthday celebration with partisan attack | Donald Trump

Donald Trump kicked off America’s 250th birthday weekend with an extraordinary partisan attack on the “communist threat” in America, portraying his supporters as “the enemy of July 4, 1776.”

The US president spoke for half an hour Friday evening at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, the final stop on his tour celebrating the milestone anniversary of the United States’ declaration of independence from Great Britain.

Greeted by chants of “USA! USA!” and briefly interrupted by a flyover of F-16 jets, Trump praised the four presidents whose faces are etched into the granite mountain: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.

“They were men of action, men of ambition, men of daring, men of destiny and men of great intelligence,” said Trump, who never ruled out the idea of his own face being added to Mount Rushmore. “Above all, they were the great men of history.”

The president asserted that American exceptionalism is rooted not only in its Constitution, but also in its distinctive culture and identity. He condemned recent attempts to “drive us out of the American spirit” and “distance us from our history,” vowing in front of a mostly white crowd, “We are going to make our country great again.”

Trump then abandoned any pretense of delivering a traditional head of state speech intended to rise above the fray, unify the political parties and strike a chord with citizens of all persuasions.

Instead, four months before the November midterm elections to the US Congress, he returned to a theme he has hammered home repeatedly of late: portraying progressive Democrats as communists, who represent an existential threat to America. He spoke hours after Zohran Mamdani, New York City’s mayor and a democratic socialist, gave a pro-immigration speech widely seen as a rebuke of Trump and his “Make America great Again” movement.

Four progressive candidates, including three democratic socialists, won Democratic primaries in New York last week and in Colorado on Tuesday. Progressive candidates also won contests in Kentucky, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas.

Trump also linked his anti-communist rhetoric to the anti-immigration theme that fueled his election. “As we approach this wonderful anniversary, we find that our American identity is once again under attack,” he said.

“A generation after fighting and winning the Cold War against the threat of communism, today we are witnessing a resurgence of the communist threat in our country, particularly from newcomers to our country who are adopting ideas totally opposed to our way of life and our great success. »

He described communism as a greater threat to American freedom than the First and Second World Wars and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. “It is the enemy of the Constitution,” he said. “It is above all the enemy of July 4, 1776…Communism is the exact opposite of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It is death, tyranny and the pursuit of evil.”

Trump argued that communists love neither God nor religion and have no respect for law, justice, principles, tradition, or God-given rights. “You can be loyal to Karl Marx or to America. You can be a communist or a patriot. You can’t be both.”

The president has been widely criticized for using the half-50-year-old as a weapon to rewrite history, promoting a narrative centered on white Christian men such as Washington and Jefferson, while neglecting to acknowledge that both were slave owners. He used Friday’s speech to attack progressive speeches.

“As for those who peddle Marxist lies about our heritage, tell our children that we live on stolen land or that our heroes were oppressors, they are doing something far worse than slandering our past,” Trump said. “They are slandering and attacking our future – they will not allow this to happen. »

Yet he was speaking in the Black Hills, which the U.S. government illegally seized from the Sioux Nation in 1877 after Congress forced the tribe to cede land it had been guaranteed under treaty.

Trump then equated the alleged communist threat to immigrants who he said could be deported. Pledging to “defeat communism quickly” and “send them into exile,” he told the cheering crowd: “We will send them back quickly and we will continue to build our country bigger, better and stronger than ever.” America will never be a communist country. »

Trump urged Congress to end the filibuster and pass the Save America Act, which has been widely criticized as a bill aimed at voter suppression. “If we do this, we’re not going to lose an election for 100 years,” he said. “The Communist Party is made up of illegal immigrants, criminals and anyone who doesn’t want to work.”

Earlier in the evening, actors portraying Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln stood behind lecterns on a blue-carpeted stage and delivered some of their most famous quotes. Country music artist Chancey Williams performed a set. In the crowd, a boy could be seen holding a handwritten sign reading “Trump the GOAT.”

Trump, whose approval ratings are near historic lows, is expected to address a crowd Saturday at the National Mall before a massive fireworks display amid a scorching heat wave that has disrupted Independence Day celebrations across the United States.
