A series of earthquakes in the coastal region of Papua, Indonesia

A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.2 shook a coastal area in Papua in eastern Indonesia on Saturday morning, the US Geological Survey said, followed by two weaker tremors minutes later.

The first two earthquakes — and the second a 5.8-magnitude tremor — struck at a relatively shallow depth of 15 kilometers, about 272 kilometers (169 miles) from the town of Abipura, according to the US Geological Survey.

Then a third earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 struck the region at a depth of 32 km.

There were no immediate reports of human or material losses from the authorities, and no tsunami warning was accompanied by internal earthquakes.

But the Indonesian Meteorological and Geophysical Agency (BKMG) warned of moderate shaking and possible light damage.

She also asked residents of nearby towns to “watch out for possible aftershocks” in her online warning.

Daryono, earthquake and tsunami coordinator for the PKMG Group, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, told AFP there were no immediate reports of damage from the area.

Citing the agency’s modeling, the official said the quake was slightly felt by residents in the coastal town of Sarme, which has about 11,000 people near the epicenter, and the neighboring Mambramo district of about 36,000.

The country experiences frequent earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of intense seismic activity where tectonic plates collide, stretching from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific Basin.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake that shook Sulawesi island in January 2021 killed more than 100 people and displaced thousands, turning buildings into a tangle of twisted metal and shards of concrete in the coastal city of Mamugo.

In 2018, a 7.5-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Palu, Sulawesi, killed more than 2,200 people and left a thousand more.

On December 26, 2004, a 9.1-magnitude earthquake struck the province of Aceh, causing a tsunami and killing more than 170,000 people in Indonesia.
