Jokowi’s first public political tour shows he’s not done trying to shape Indonesia’s future
Aditya believes that Jokowi’s visit to Lampung also serves to restore Gibran’s political visibility, as the latter does not often seem to be given important responsibilities within the Prabowo administration.
Aditya said there were signs that Prabowo’s camp was not entirely comfortable with Jokowi’s renewed political activities, given the brief public statements that appeared to have been made “as a courtesy” to the former president.
The deputy general chairman of Prabowo’s Gerindra Party, Prasetyo Hadi – who is also state secretary – was invited by journalists to comment on Jokowi’s tour.
“We from Gerindra congratulate him (Jokowi) because it means he is healthy again, although he was a little sick before,” Prasetyo told reporters on June 26.
“And as a personality and a statesman, I don’t think there’s a problem either.”
Lingkar Madani’s Ray, meanwhile, pointed out that Prabowo’s camp had good reasons to closely follow these political developments.
He said Jokowi could prepare several political scenarios for Gibran before 2029, including the possibility that the vice president–The president could potentially run alongside another presidential candidate if Prabowo chooses another vice presidential candidate.
Gibran’s latest initiatives – such as meeting with student protesters to hear their demands amid concerns about the economy following the Stock market rout and weakening of the rupee – seems intended to win public sympathy.
But BRIN’s Wasisto cautioned against reading too much into the current lineups.
He said that despite Jokowi supporting the duo for another term, there was no guarantee they would remain on the same ticket in 2029, noting that Indonesian politics can change significantly during a presidential term.
“There is no 100% guarantee because the 2029 elections could change dramatically from current projections,” Wasisto said.
The latest moves appear to indicate that Jokowi intends to establish dynastic politics, a pervasive trend in Indonesia.
Indonesia’s fifth president, Megawati, is the daughter of the country’s founding father, Soekarno. Meanwhile, Megawati’s daughter Puan Maharani is the current Speaker of Parliament.
Furthermore, Indonesia’s sixth president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, has two sons who are also involved in politics.
His eldest, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, is the current coordinating minister of infrastructure and regional development, while his youngest, Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono, is now vice-president of the People’s Consultative Assembly.
