The Lynn County earthquake was the largest to hit the Willamette Valley since the 1993 “Spring Earthquake”

PORTLAND, Oregon (KOIN) – The 4.4 magnitude earthquake near the small town of Lacombe in Lynn County on Friday morning was the largest to occur within the Willamette Valley since the “spring earthquake” in 1993.

The 1993 earthquake, also known as the Scotts Mills earthquake, occurred on March 25 at 5:34 a.m. The earthquake was felt around the Pacific Northwest and was one of the largest ever recorded in the Willamette Valley region.

USGS data shows that Friday’s earthquake of medium magnitude was detected as far north as Longview, Washington, and as south as Roseburg. Scott Burns, Portland State University emeritus professor of engineering geology, told KOIN 6 News that an earthquake of this magnitude is rare in the Willamette Valley, occurring roughly once every 20 years.

“The quake of magnitude 4.4 is large and can be felt quite far away,” Burns said. “I’m in Salem now and the locals felt it this morning.”

According to USGS historical records, Friday’s quake was one of six earthquakes of magnitude 4.4 or greater that have occurred in the Willamette Valley since the late 1800s. The first recorded Willamette Valley earthquake of this magnitude was 5.0 that was recorded near McMinnville on April 2, 1896.

However, Oregon State University seismologist Andrew Meggs told KOIN 6 that earthquakes of smaller magnitudes are more common in the region. The state’s ability to detect these earthquakes has also greatly improved over the past 50 years.

“Regional coverage of seismographs has grown from five in 1969 to more than 300 today,” Meggs said. “Station density and coverage are essential requirements for detecting earthquakes and their location, especially small earthquakes.”

Today’s earthquake was a shallow “crustal quake” that occurred along a fault line 8.8 miles below the Earth’s surface. The quake lasted about five to 10 seconds, experts say, and was not directly related to the Cascadia Subduction Zone event or caused by volcanic activity in the area.

While the earthquake occurred definitively along the fault line, Burns said that the amount of time that has elapsed since the last earthquake in which the fault occurred is unknown. That’s because scientists have only begun to understand Oregon’s seismic capabilities in the past 50 years.
