Hockey World Cup: Wales men crowdfund to offset £150,000 costs
The Welsh men need to raise £150,000 to fund their participation in the Hockey World Cup in the Netherlands and Belgium this summer.
Hockey Wales has launched a crowdfunding campaign with an initial target of £40,000 to help cover travel, accommodation and match costs.
But CEO Paul Whapham says the total bill for preparing and sending the squad to the tournament is significantly higher.
Wales secured qualification with a 2-1 win over Poland in Chile in March, sealing back-to-back World Cup appearances after their tournament debut in India in 2023.
Players remain responsible for financing much of their own international commitments while balancing careers, university studies and regular travel for training.
Despite competing with fully funded professional programmes, Wales have continued to improve on the international stage, with qualification marking another major milestone for a squad that largely trains around work commitments.
Hockey Wales hopes the World Cup campaign will not only reward the current group, but also inspire more young people to take up the sport.
Whapham told the BBC: “We’ve had to try to find that within four months. That’s a difficult task no matter what sport you play, and extremely difficult when you’re largely amateur and with the resources we have in hockey. Financially we don’t get paid to go to the World Cup, everything we do is self-funded.”
One of Wales’ goalscorers in qualifying, Jack Pritchard, says the demands on players go far beyond what happens on the pitch.
“It’s a difficult balance to get the right balance between education and the day job. We’re different ages, some are students, some work full-time, some work part-time. A lot of the guys are from London, places like Nottingham and Birmingham,” Pritchard said.
“Being a part-time program, we have to fund ourselves year in and year out. The costs are going up, so we have to do something about it. During the summer, six months out of the year we try to live like the professional athletes we need to be to play at this level. Our funding has gone down in recent years and ironically our performance has gone up,” he said.
Whapham hopes another appearance on hockey’s biggest stage can create a lasting legacy beyond the results in the Netherlands and Belgium, by encouraging more young players to join clubs across Wales.
“People in clubs can look at people and say, ‘If they can do it, why can’t I?’ At the grassroots level, we are still seeing more and more young players coming through to play the game.”
In January, Jacob Draper had told The Hockey Paper that Wales was “not in a great place”, while Hockey Wales’ chief executive said the governing body was “unsure” whether teams would be able to travel before taking advantage of future performance funding.
