Since the West Coast and California, in particular, get most of the headlines when it comes to earthquakes, it may come as a surprise to some that very few earthquakes actually occur in Heartland.

While Nebraska has not experienced any major earthquake, it is almost unheard of.

“Fault cracks are everywhere, so Nebraska is not immune, but the chances are slim,” explains Harmon Maher, PhD, a professor of geology at UNU. “For those of us in the Great Plains, it’s a little hard to tell about earthquake hazards because many small sediments bury and hide deeper faults.”

However, it is not necessary for an earthquake to occur in Nebraska for its effects to be felt. In 2016, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake hit Oklahoma with aftershocks that shook structures all the way up to Omaha. And in 2018, four mild earthquakes struck central Nebraska over the course of two days although no damage was reported.

Unlike many other natural disasters, earthquakes can strike without warning and their intensity can vary greatly. Which is why, every year in October, multiple nations and nations participate in the “Great ShakeOut,” which is standardized earthquake preparation and training. This year’s event takes place at 10:20 a.m. local time on Thursday, October 20, with schools, businesses and cities all encouraged to use the time to do their own workouts and share snaps or photos using the hashtag #ShakeOut or by tagging ShakeOut on social media.

“Although Nebraska is not at the top of the earthquake list, there is never a bad time to make sure you are prepared to respond to a major hazard,” explains Diane Mack, Director of Emergency Management at the United Nations Office. “The same resources and skills will be needed that will be used after an earthquake in the wake of other major hazards such as a hurricane or building collapse.”

During this year’s GreatShakeout, UNO Emergency Management encourages UNO campuses to get involved and stay informed about crisis response planning. Here are some ways you can join the national dialogue and help prepare for a potential disaster:
